Malik Gaines is a writer and artist based in Los Angeles. Gaines regularly writes art criticism and journalism for major art magazines such as Artforum and Frieze and has written essays about contemporary artists in conjunction with exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Secession, Vienna. He has also curated group and solo artist exhibitions at a variety of venues, including LAXART, Los Angeles, where he is Adjunct Curator. In 2003 Gaines received a Penny McCall Foundation Award for his work as a critic and curator. He is a founding member of the performance collective My Barbarian, which has performed or shown video work at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Roy and Edna Disney/Cal Arts Theater (REDCAT), Los Angeles; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Joe’s Pub, New York; and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. Gaines is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in theater and performance studies at UCLA.
