Ghada Amer was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963 to a diplomat father and a mother with a PhD in engineering. A peripatetic childhood led her to art school in Nice, France, where she graduated with an MFA in painting in 1989, and then to New York, where she now lives and works.  Her work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been featured in many major group and solo exhibitions, at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Venice Biennale. In early 2008 a retrospective of her work was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, at the museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
